Selah is spunky, independent, and caring, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship progress and grow. ![]() Xander is a wonderful hero-compassionate, industrious, and capable. Set in James Towne, Virginia in 1634, Frantz brings this slice of American history alive to the point where I could vividly imagine being present in the scenes.īe prepared to fall in love with Xander Renick and Selah Hopewell as they navigate life among the rigors of Colonial America. One of the best things Deep has going for it is, despite its size, the story starts off like a relay racer hearing a starter shot. So, is this modern classic worth your time? Is the reprint something to look forward to? The answers are a resounding yes, so let’s dive into what makes this book popular.Ī Fire Upon the Deep, on top of being written by an author with one of the coolest names ever, is an epic science-fiction story that explores a galaxy-spanning conflict that is being determined through medieval warfare on an unmapped planet. At the same time, it is highly regarded as one of the best science fiction novels to come out in the last 30 years. While it is not a golden age sci-fi, missing the era by about 50 years, it definitely feels like a tribute to the great classics. Nadya is an excellent heroine, she is so easy to sympathize with. She gets to test the tale when her evil stepmom forces her out of the house at night and she finds herself at the door of the Witch of Duva herself.īardugo has said that Hansel and Gretel influenced this folktale, and you can definitely see the influences here.although this tale kind of turns Hansel and Gretel on its head. The woods outside of Duva are said to eat girls, at least that has what Nadya has been raised believing. The characters were absolutely engaging and the story just sucked me right in. ![]() I was amazed at what a great story Bardugo wove in such a small space. ![]() |
